2020 Genevieve Blanc de Blanc Cap Classique
Cap Classique is traditional method sparkling wine (aka Champagne Method) from South Africa. Genevieve winery is headed by owner and winemaker Melissa Genevieve Nelson. She launched her brand in 2008 and produces only Cap Classique method wines. She now farms her own organic vineyards in Bot River with her partner and while all the fruit isn't currently coming from their own property that's the end goal.
This Blanc de Blanc is 100% Chardonnay grapes from a mixture of 28 year old vines and her own estate grapes. Aged on the lees for 48 months, this 2020 is somehow both steely and lean, yet mouth coating and rich. There are notes of quince, yellow kiwi, apple tart, butter cookies, orange peel and fennel with floral undertones. The finish is long and racy with a mouth-coating lees-y texture.
