2023 Scions of Sinai Atlantikas Pinotage
Pinotage is a red grape variety that is unique to South Africa, created in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (known locally as Hermitage, hence the name Pinotage). It produces bold, deeply colored wines with flavors that range from red berries and plums to smoky, earthy, and even coffee-like notes.
Scions of Sinai pays homage to the rich heritage and hidden significance of Sinai Hill, nestled amidst the Helderberg region, just 12 km south of Stellenbosch Town. The fruit for this wine comes from organically grown, dry-farmed bush vines in decomposed granite soils. These Pinotage vines were planted in 1976 and 1996 and are the closest to the ocean in South Africa. The grapes are picked just as they approach ripeness, to keep alcohol low and fruit just barely ripe. They’re hand-harvested early in the morning and brought directly into the cellar. 30% are destemmed, 30% are kept with stems, and 40% are direct-pressed. This wine ferments and ages in all stainless steel.
