The Wine: Today, the Dao region is in a period of refocus and reinvigoration, and one of the most influential characters of this rebirth is Antonio Madeira. Over time, Antonio has assembled an estate of 8 Hectares with 20 separate plots of vines in 6 different villages within the Serra da Estrela sub-region of the Dao. He works all his parcels biodynamically and plows his vineyards with horses. This hands-on work is labor-intensive, and he employs 6 people full-time to help him work the vines.
This wine is a field blend of about 40 different indigenous portuguese grapes. It’s approximately 75% red varietals and 25% white varietals. On the nose lots of red fruits and some herbal notes. On the palate there is this silky texture, with red and black fruits, a light touch of spices, and ending with a rounded, rich well balanced finish.
Zodiac Pairing: Aquarius. Aquarius energy is inventive, slightly unconventional and always future thinking. And while this wine and this style is very much steeped in history and tradition, the producer, the way it's being made and even how it's being marketed is very much an exercise in innovation. 40 different indigenous varieties blended together in one wine might have been common in the past, but today it's remarkably unique. A delish wine that would please any Aquarian.
